A young woman died in single-car accident in Upper Roxborough early Sunday after the vehicle she was riding in struck a deer and a utility pole, according to police.

The 22-year-old woman, whose identity has not been released, was a passenger in a 2005 Dodge driven by a 27-year-old man, police said. The man was driving on Hagys Mill Road around 12:37 a.m. when he hit a deer and then a PECO utility pole, according to authorities.

The pole then snapped and fell onto the car, cutting the vehicle in half, police said.

At some point, the woman was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to Einstein Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:14 a.m., according to police.

The male driver was taken to the same hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
