A 38-year-old woman who had gone out for a morning run in Drexel Hill, Delaware County, was fighting for her life Saturday after being struck by a vehicle, police said.

The 86-year-old man who was driving the 2001 Toyota Camry that hit her stayed at the scene and has been cooperating, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

“He was on his way to church,” Chitwood said. “Right now, it’s just a tragic accident.”

The incident occurred about 8 a.m. on State Road near Harper Avenue, a residential neighborhood. The woman had left her nearby home and was running on the road, when the Camry, which was turning onto State from Harper hit her, Chitwood said.

The woman became trapped underneath the car. “Police officers and firefighters were able to lift the vehicle and pull her out,” Chitwood said. She was transported to Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, where she was in “extremely critical” condition, Chitwood said late Saturday morning.

“He probably didn’t see her,” Chitwood said of the driver. “It looks like just a freak accident.”
