The United States launched a missile attack on Syria on Thursday night, striking an air base in response to the country’s use of chemical weapons against civilians earlier this week.

Members of Congress from Pennsylvania and New Jersey were quick to weigh in on the attack, with some supporting President Trump’s use of force and others calling for congressional authorization and for the president to rethink his refugee ban.

Rep. Mike Kelly, a Republican from western Pennsylvania, voiced support for the missile strike.

The president cast the move as necessary to deter future use of chemical weapons and called on other countries “to end the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria.”

Some Democratic lawmakers (and others) used the president’s words to reiterate their view that his administration should rescind his executive order temporarily banning refugees and immigrants from six primarily Muslim countries.

Democrats were also calling for Congress to vote on an authorization of force.

“I am deeply concerned about President Trump undertaking military action without any clear authorization from Congress,” Rep. Brendan Boyle, whose district covers part of Montgomery County and Northeast Philadelphia, said in a statement. “Our Constitution makes clear that these decisions must come before Congress. Congress must not abdicate this responsibility. We, the people’s elected representatives, must finally debate and vote on this issue.”

The debate is not falling squarely on party lines, however.

Congressional leaders in both parties voiced support for the measure, though top Democrats are cautioning that further escalation would require authorization, Politico reported. And some libertarian-leaning Republicans are criticizing Trump’s decision to launch the strikes without first seeking approval from Congress.
