Wawa has launched  a fund raising campaign at its Delaware stores for the family of slain State Police Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard and says it will donate $50,000 of its own money.

Ballard, 32,  whose survivors include his wife and daughter, was shot and killed Wednesday in the parking of lot of a Wawa in Bear, Del., when he went to investigate a suspicious car. His alleged killer, Burgon Sealy Jr., was shot dead the following day after a 20-hour standoff with police at his family’s home 15 miles away.

Offiicals have not disclosed if they have determined why Sealy suddenly shot the trooper before fleeing in another car.

Wawa said its $50,000 donation and money donated by its customers will be given to the memorial fund established at the Delaware State Police Federal Credit Union.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Cpl. Ballard and the entire Delaware State Police family, Wawa said in a statement.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday to Ballard, an 8-year-veteran of the force.

Donations, made out to DSTA – Cpl. Stephen Ballard Memorial Fund, also can be mailed to PO Box 168, Cheswood, Del., 19936, Wawa says.
