Suspect shot by laundromat owner charged with robbery

The suspect who was shot and wounded by a laundromat owner in Fairhill on Sunday has been charged with robbery, police said Tuesday.

Marcus Quinones, 40, of the 200 block of East Somerset Street in Kensington, was also charged with aggravated assault and related offenses, police said.

About 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Quinones allegedly burst into the Launder Center, at 2907 N. Fifth St., and robbed the 33-year-old owner at knifepoint, police said. After grabbing $2,000 in cash, he fled south on Fifth Street, police said.

The laundromat owner grabbed his gun, which he legally owns, and chased the robber out of the store. That’s when the robber threw the money into the air, police said.

The business owner fired his gun, striking the robber twice in the chest and wounding a 52-year-old woman who was at a corner waiting for a bus, police said. Quinones was taken by police to Temple University Hospital, where he was in critical condition Sunday. The bystander was also taken by police to Temple, where she was in stable condition, police said.

Police have said the laundromat owner will not be charged, including in the shooting of the bystander, which was accidental, Lt. Robert Brockenbrough of East Detectives said.
