Television viewers in South Jersey got a scare Tuesday night when an alert about a nuclear power plant emergency was transmitted in error.

“A civil authority has issued A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT WARNING for the following counties/areas: Cumberland; Salem, NJ; at 8:54 PM” read the warning the flashed on TV screens interrupting regularly scheduled programming.

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management posted a correction and explanation on its Facebook page at 9:19 p.m. and a few minutes later on Twitter.

“You may have seen this message broadcasted over your TV tonight. We were conducting our regularly scheduled exercise with PSEG Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Power Station. This message went out in error,” the agency said.

“There is NO warning or emergency at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience,” the agency concluded.
