Noted British author and Pope Francis biographer Austen Ivereigh joins The Philadelphia Inquirer’s David O’Reilly for an insightful conversation about the pope before the pontiff arrives in Philadelphia. Ivereigh’s book, The Great Reformer – Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope, explores Jorge Bergoglio’s youth growing up in Buenos Aires and how it has shaped his beliefs. He considers how Bergoglio’s Jesuit training in Argentina and Chile instilled in him a deep compassion for the poor as he rose from priest to cardinal and then the papacy in 2013. O’Reilly, who has covered religion for much of his long Inquirer career, explores Ivereigh’s description of Pope Francis as a “radical” and engages him in a thoughtful discussion of the pope’s widely reported “Who am I to judge?” remark early in his pontificate.
