The Pittsburgh Steelers tweeted Thursday that owner Dan Rooney has died at the age of 84.

In 1975, Rooney became the Steelers’ president. His NFL accomplishments since taking the reins are legendary. He has chaired several committees, taken the lead on ending a players’ strike and helped in the creation of the salary cap in 1993. He also created the “Rooney Rule” which resulted in minorities getting more chance to coach in the NFL.

On the field, Rooney was the head of a team that won six Super Bowls, more than any other.
