The pilot of a helicopter died Thursday after crashing in New Castle County, Del., police said.

The pilot was the only person on the aircraft, said the Delaware State Police, which is leading the investigation.

The helicopter crashed about 11:55 a.m. by an industrial area off of Quigley Boulevard in New Castle, as it was trying to land at the New Castle Airport, said James Salmon, spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, which operates the airport.

He said the Eurocopter helicopter was a medical evacuation helicopter, but was not performing any rescue mission at the time. He did not know from where it originated, but said it was not based at the New Castle Airport.

The (Wilmington) News Journal, citing airport general manager Stephen Williams, reported that preliminary indications were that the helicopter was conducting practice approaches at the airport.
