“If you want to call it that,” Mackanin said. “We’re being cautious with him this early in the season.”

Nola had been eligible to be activated Monday. Rookie right-hander Nick Pivetta could make more than one start as a result. Pivetta is scheduled to make his big league debut Sunday afternoon against the Dodgers.

Mackanin said Nola will be re-evaluated to see when he might throw his next bullpen session.

“He’s improving, but he’s not 100 percent,” Mackanin said. “There’s something bugging him. We’re just going to take it day to day.”
