Asbury Park has become the latest New Jersey town to try and regulate short-term rentals like Airbnb or VRBO.

On Saturday, township officials in the beachfront community held an open meeting with about 50 residents to discuss possible regulations that would provide a uniform structure for properties rented for 30 days or less and address nuisance complaints, the Asbury Park Press reported.

The city plans to introduce an ordinance this spring, the paper reported.

Opponents say the ordinance would be an “unreasonable infringement on private property right” and have started a Moveon.org petition to present to township officials.

“Residents have become increasingly reliant on supplementing their income through rentals to offset spiking city taxes and in 99% of instances fully comply with all existing codes related to noise and nuisance,” the petition states.

It argues that while developers enjoy concession and tax breaks, individual residents would be penalized for their resourcefulness

About 6,100 residents in the Garden State hosted sites through Airbnb last year, renting to about 257,000 people resulting in $50 million in income for the renters, NJ.com reports.

Two bills are advancing through the state legislature that would tax short-term rental companies the same way as hotels and help establish regulations. Proponents have said the bills would level the playing field, and provide funding for municipalities with the additional taxes, NJ.com reproted.

Last month, the Toms River council voted to limit short-term rentals to a 30-day minimum, except in certain beach areas during the summer months, the Asbury Park Press reported.

Last September, the Borough of Palisades Park joined Cresskill and Englewood Cliffs in banning short term rentals. Newark and Jersey City decided to tax Airbnb rentals, NJ.com reported.
