The operator of a stolen motorcycle was in critical condition after he allegedly struck a Ford minivan in West Philadelphia early Tuesday, police said.

In a twist, the driver of the minivan abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

Police said the 22-year-old critically injured man was riding a stolen 2006 Yamaha motorcycle west on Walnut Street at about 3:40 a.m. when he crashed into the Ford, which was traveling north on 58th.

A 26-year-old woman who was a passenger on the motorcycle suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

A police spokesman said he did not know if the motorcyclist was the one believed to have stolen the Yamaha.

Police also were looking for the driver of the 2003 Ford, which had a Pennsylvania tag, KJG-5556.

The investigation remains ongoing with the police Accident Investigation District. No names were released.
