The body of a South Jersey fisherman who had been reported missing in January was found last week, police said Friday.

Christopher Hugg, 45, of Tuckerton, Ocean County, was spotted on Middle Island in Little Egg Harbor, the waters separating Long Beach Island and mainland Ocean County.

A pilot and an inspector with the Ocean County Mosquito Extermination Commission were flying back and forth over the area on April 28, spraying for larvae, when they spotted a body on the island and reported it to state police, said Mike Senyk, an official with the mosquito commission.

Trooper Lawrence Peele, a State Police spokesman, confirmed it was Hugg who was found dead. Hugg had drowned and his death was ruled accidental, Peele said.

On Jan. 12, Hugg had gone out clamming in the waters of Little Egg Harbor on his 17-foot Bowrider vessel. About 8 p.m., he called a relative to report he had run aground, but said he did not need help.

The next morning, he was reported missing, and his boat was found that day with fishing gear inside it on Hither Island, which is in the harbor near Middle Island.
