PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Authorities say emergency responders rescued a man from a collapsed row house in southwest Philadelphia.

Officials said the collapse of the structure was reported shortly after 2:30 a.m. Saturday. When fire department crews arrived, they heard a man screaming from the rubble.

Lt. Bernard Gillam said rescuers had to pick their way through the wreckage and spent nearly an hour removing piles of wood to reach the man and get him to safety.

Officials said the 59-year-old man was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and listed in stable condition. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
