A 6-year-old girl was struck by her mother’s SUV and killed Friday morning in the City of Chester, police said.

Layla Rodriguez’s mother took her to Crozer Chester Medical Center in the vehicle that had hit her in the 200 block of Ivy Street, and she was pronounced dead at 9:48 a.m.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred in the 200 block of Ivy Street.

Police gave the following account:

The girl’s mother, Sharnei Thompson, 29, put her 4-year-old in a back car seat and then pulled out of a side parking space to let her other children enter the SUV.

The 4-year-old got out of the car seat and put down the electric window and/or tried to open the back door.

Thompson put the vehicle in what she thought was park, but was actually reverse. Layla was waiting behind the vehicle, which hit her as Thompson reached for the 4-year-old. A 10-year-old was hit but not injured by the car.

Thompson may have accidentally hit the accelerator while reaching for the child in the back of the SUV.

Thompson has not been charged, police said Friday.
