Funeral services were held Friday for a Delaware State Police trooper who was fatally shot in a Wawa parking lot last week.

Hundreds of law enforcement personnel and others turned out on a rainy, dreary morning for the public visitation and memorial at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington.

Burial, to be attended only by family and Delaware State Police personnel, was to follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park.

Ballard was shot to death outside the convenience store in Bear, New Castle County, on April 26, after he approached a vehicle for what he thought was suspicious activity.

A man in the passenger seat, identified as Burgon Sealy Jr., got into a struggle with Ballard and then began firing at him.

Sealy drove away from the scene was shot and killed by police after a 19½-hour standoff and barricade.

Sealy’s motive remains unknown. Wawa has started a fund raising campaign for the trooper’s family.

Local law enforcement agencies were among those that made the trip to Delaware to honor Ballard.

Friday’s services caused numerous road closures, including on Interstate 95.

Northbound lanes on I-95 were closed between the Christiana Mall (Exit 4A) and the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (Exit 6) from 6 a.m. until the processession of emergency vehicles travels to the Chase Center, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation.

Those lanes were closed again starting at 8 a.m. for the last procession of emergency vehicles traveling there.

Transit officials said to expect significant delays on I-95 as well as alternate routes of State Routes 896 and 273 and U.S. Routes 40 and 13.

Streets will also be closed for the procession from the Riverfront to the cemetery, starting at about noon, following this route: Justison Street – Martin Luther King Boulevard – South Market Street – North DuPont Highway – Lovelace Avenue (U-turn) to Gracelawn Memorial Cemetery.
