A forest fire sent thick smoke into the air in New Jersey and caused some closures.

The blaze consumed more than 1,000 acres in a remote area of the Wharton State Forest in Burlington County Thursday into Friday.

By Friday morning, dozens of firefighters had the blaze 60 percent contained, Robert Geist of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said.

Smoke from the blaze crept into neighboring counties including Ocean and Atlantic counties.

The forest service closed Batsto Village, Crowleys Landing Boat Launch and Bulltown Road as well as some campgrounds and trails due to smoke and ash from the blaze, Geist said. Fire isn’t threatening those areas.
