Federal authorities arrested a 57-year-old Bucks County man Thursday accused in a four year, half-million-dollar run of bank robberies that earned him the nickname the “Straw Hat Bandit.”

Prosecutors allege Richard Boyle, of Doylestown, donned a distinctive disguise – a tan hat over a makeshift mask of fabric that covered all but his eyes – to commit 11 robberies in Montgomery and Bucks Counties between 2012 and 2016.

In nearly every case, he allegedly brandished a black semiautomatic handgun and ordered customers to the floor before demanding money from tellers and fleeing on foot.

According to an indictment filed in federal court in Philadelphia, Boyle laundered some of the stolen funds through his aerial photography business, Sky Eye View. The company had next to no business aside from the $17,000 he injected into it from his crime spree, investigators said.

Boyle is expected to appear in court Thursday afternoon on bank robbery, money laundering and firearms charges.

It was not immediately clear whether he had retained an attorney.
