A distracted teenager with eyes and ears focused on an iPhone’s FaceTime app was injured when stepped directly into the path of a moving station wagon on Wednesday afternoon in Abington.

Police said the 14 year-old-girl was struck around 2:45 p.m.  outside Abington High School when she walked into the path of the wagon traveling south on the 900 block of Highland Avenue. The driver immediately pulled over to help, and the girl was taken to Abington Hospital. The extent of her injuries have not been shared, though a posted photo showed damage to the hood and grill of the wagon.

While not nearly as prevalent as driver-distracted accidents attributed to phone use, a 2015 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study reported that the cellphone distracted pedestrian problem is growing. It cited more than 1,500 pedestrians nationwide  treated in emergency rooms in 2012 as a result of cellphone distraction, twice the injury count reported seven years prior.
