The high-profile trial of the man accused of killing a state trooper and wounding another in a 2014 ambush was delayed Thursday morning as the defendant, Eric Frein, was hospitalized.

Michael Weinstein, Frein’s lawyer, said he was hospitalized Thursday morning before the third day of his trial was set to begin in Milford, Pike County. Weinstein declined to comment on the reason for the hopsitalization or his client’s medical condition.

The Scranton Times-Tribune and other news outlets reported that Frein’s parents told reporters gathered at the Pike County courthouse that their son had hit his head while brushing his teeth.

District Attorney Ray Tonkin said in a tweet Thursday morning that the trial was expected resume at 1:30 p.m.

Frein, 33, has been held in the Pike County jail without bail since his 2014 arrest. He is facing a potential death-penalty sentence and is charged with first-degree murder, terrorism, and other crimes for the death of Cpl. Bryon Dickson and the shooting of Trooper Alex Douglass at the state police barracks in Blooming Grove in Spetember 2014.

Frein, of Canadensis, Monroe County, eluded capture during a 48-day manhunt in the Poconos, drawing national attention and more than 1,000 law enforcement officers to Pike and Monroe Counties.

His trial began this week, with two days of emotional testimony from state police dispatchers and troopers who were inside the barracks on the night of the shooting. One trooper described the ambush as “an attack on our barracks,” and a dispatcher testified that Dickson mouthed “help me” to her when she found him shot and lying on the sidewalk.

A jury from Chester County will determine Frein’s innocence or guilt — and whether he should be sentneced to death if he is convicted.
