The St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church building in Essington, Delaware County, will close permanently June 12 after serving as a worship site for St. Gabriel parish in Norwood, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced Sunday.

St. Gabriel merged with St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in July of 2014 and the newly combined congregation retained the name St. Gabriel and remained in that church’s building.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque then was named a worship site with the sanctuary used only for occasional celebrations of Mass as well as funerals and weddings.  Church officials told parishioners about the closing at services this weekend.
