City Councilwoman Helen Gym is the 2017 recipient of the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award, presented by the national political action committee, EMILY’s List.

Gym, who became the first Asian American woman to serve in City Council when she was elected 15 months ago, was recognized on Monday by the organization, which works to get Democratic women elected to office.

She will receive the honor at a gala in Washington, D.C. May 3, where Sen. Elizabeth Warren will deliver the keynote address and former Rep. Giffords will officially present her with the award.

Gym was one of six people nominated this year. She was recognized by EMILY’s List for her work advocating for public schools and more recently, her activism for immigrant rights and push back against President Trump’s Muslim travel ban.

“Helen has displayed an unwavering dedication to the women and families in her community,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List.

Gym said she was thrilled by the honor, which was determined by an online vote.

“I’m encouraged by the role women are playing in politics and I always have been and I love that there are so many women…who instead of fitting into a particular role are making politics be a part of who they are,” Gym said. “I think Elizabeth Warren is probably one of the greatest definitions of someone where politics now reflects her as opposed to the other way around and I think you can do the same thing at the municipal level.”
