A Northwestern University freshman club crew team member has drowned in a Chicago channel after falling overboard during practice Monday morning.

The body of Mohammed Ramzan, 19, of Auburn, Wash., was recovered from the North Shore Channel in Lincolnwood on Monday night, according to a statement from the university.

“We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Mohammed’s family and friends for this tragic loss, which affects us all, and we urge all members of our community to reach out and support one another,” Patricia Telles-Irvin, vice president for student affairs, wrote.

Nine people were in the shell at the time of the 7:30 a.m. incident. The team coach and another rower went into the water to try and rescue Ramzan. The shell with the other rowers and coxswain did not capsize, ABC7 reported.

“Mohammed will be remembered as one of Northwestern Crew’s most perserverant athletes and friendliest faces,” the team posted on its Instagram site.

The search was delayed by severe weather and lightning. Strong current and murky waters complicated the effort, ABC7 reported.

“We put the boats in the water with sonar, and that gives us the best possibility of making a find,” Chief Jim Walters, Skokie Fire Dept told the station at the time of the search.

Officials said crew team members do not wear life jackets because they restrict movement.
