Caretaker arrested in death of Philadelphia toddler

A Philadelphia woman was arrested Tuesday in the death last week of an emaciated toddler in her care. police said.


Jedayah Nesmith, 22, of the 7100 block of N. 15th Street in the city’s West Oak Lane neighborhood, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, recklessly endangering another person, concealing the death of a child, and abuse of corpse, the Philadelphia police announced.

Last Wednesday,  police responded to a “hospital case” at Nesmith’s home and found two-year-old Azim Jones-Fearon lying on a bed in the rear bedroom.





The child was naked and emaciated, police said. Medics pronounced the boy dead a few minutes later.

Nesmith was described by police as the toddler’s caretaker.

The cause of death is pending the results of the autopsy. The investigation by the police homicide unit is continuing, leaving open the possibility of additional charges.
