A candidate in Schuylkill County is out to catch the rat that is stealing his campaign signs.

With just days until the primary, Joseph Kowalchick, a Republican who is running for supervisor in Norwegian Township, decided to get serious about catching the thief who was making off with his political lawn signs.

So he built a trap – a really big trap.

“We have a major, major problem with signs being stolen,” he said, adding that 16 signs were taken in one night. “When I ‘m losing the signs, I’m losing out on advertising for the campaign.”

The trap weighs between 250 and 275 pounds and is made with 2-by-6-foot posts, 2-inch pipes and the coil spring off the front end of an automobile, he said.

“It looks like it would break both of your legs,” Kowalchick said. “But, it doesn’t function.”

Kowalchick, a former long-haul truck driver who is sidelined with a back injury, said he is running to improve essential services in the township and to help residents with their problems. He grew up in the area and said he wants to give back.

Two Democrats and three other Republicans are vying for the office. The township leans right and voted Republican in the 2016 presidential election, he said.

But this isn’t a case of one party trying to oust another. It is a primary election, remember?

Neither of the two Democrats have reported missing signs, Kowalchick said.

“It is rumored that three out of four Republicans have had their signs stolen,” he said.

The thefts haven’t discouraged him at all, he said.

“I’m persistent. I don’t take no for an answer,” Kowalchick said. “I’m not going to give up on this and it is not going to quiet my campaign down.”
