Not long after, Buchholz strolled back to the clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park with a trainer and a strained flexor tendon. He’ll have an MRI on Wednesday.

It was the second time in his career he’s suffered the injury. The first was July 2015 with Boston. He didn’t make another start that season, although he experienced a setback during a bullpen session while rehabbing.

“Nobody in a big league clubhouse wants to be hurt … it’s frustrating especially being a guy that’s been hurt multiple times,” said Buchholz, who allowed six runs. “I’ve been on the [disabled list] for an extended period of time, multiple times. It’s nothing that you want to happen.”

If Buchholz misses time as is expected — Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said he would be “surprised” if Buchholz made his next start — the club has decisions to make and options awaiting at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

There are four starters already on the 40-man roster who make the most sense.

Zach Eflin made 11 starts for the Phillies last season and pitched well for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday in his first start since being activated from the disabled list. He is on schedule to start in Buchholz’s place if called upon next Tuesday.

Jake Thompson was roughed up in his first Triple-A game, but he too made double-digit starts with the Phillies last year and could be promoted to fill a spot. Thompson started slowly upon being called up last year, but after simplifying his mechanics, he held a 3.41 ERA in his final six starts.

Nick Pivetta and Ben Lively both pitched Sunday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley as well, and, although they have no big league experience, could also fill in.

On Wednesday, the Phillies will learn the fate of their No. 3 starter. Luckily, they won’t have to look long for a replacement.
