A driver was taken into custody after allegedly hitting two pedestrians and seriously injuring them before fleeing the scene, Philadelphia police said.

The 29-year-old man struck the pedestrians with his 2002 Nissan Maxima at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday at North 5th Street and Erie Avenue, on the border of the city’s Hunting Park and Franklinville sections.

One of the victims, a 44-year-old man, was listed in critical condition at Temple University Hospital on Monday, police said. The other pedestrian, a 41-year-old woman, was in stable condition at Temple.

A witness saw a Maxima keep driving east on Erie Avenue after crash, and followed the vehicle to the 2100 block of Fraley Street in Wissinoming, about four miles away.

Officers were called there and found the Maxima and driver, who was taken into custody. His name wasn’t immediately released.
