It was a deadly start to the first of the month as two men were fatally shot in separate shootings in North Philadelphia, police said.

Officers found the first victim at about 1 a.m. Saturday lying facedown on the sidewalk on the 3400 block of North 2nd Street. The victim, shot once in the head, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not known.

Then, about an hour later, gunfire was exchanged outside a nightclub on the 3000 block of North 22nd Street. Two security guards witnessed the shooting, then fired their weapons, police said.

During the melee, a 22-year-old man was shot once in the head. He was rushed by police to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:02 a.m.

Another man, 23, was shot once in his left leg and was taken by private vehicle to Temple, where he was in stable condition, police said.

Police said it was not immediately clear if the victims were hit by shots fired by the security guards or other people.

No arrests were reported in either of the shootings, which remain under investigation by the homicide unit.
